Alice Sutcliffe is an architectural and landscape artist whose work explores the character, history and emotional resonance of a place.

Working in a realistic style, Alice paints houses, urban landscapes and everyday places rich in character. She is drawn to scenes that feel familiar or nostalgic... to places that remind her of home, or capture a particular moment in time. Alice works primarily from photographs taken during her walks and travels, approaching each subject with a considered sensitivity to character, detail and atmosphere.

Looking beyond the physical setting, Alice considers the memories and stories held within a place. She particularly loves painting homes as 'portraits'... as a way of holding onto memories and the special connection a home can bring as life moves on.

Drawn to art, craft and design from a young age, Alice completed an Advanced Diploma in Architectural Building Design, studied Graphic Design and received a scholarship to study Fine Arts. Her painting practice is largely self-taught, drawing on the skills and understanding gained through years of design and creative study.

Today, Alice's practice brings together her lifelong interests in art, architecture and design.

Her paintings invite us to pause, look again, and consider the places that shape our lives and stay with us.

Angela Melouney is a Sydney-based artist whose colourful paintings find humour and personality in everyday life.

Cats are a favourite subject, caught in moments of curiosity, mischief and quiet contentment, often among beautiful interiors we want to climb into. She also paints other beloved pets, flowers and still lifes.

Angela grew up surrounded by painters, but her own path led to law. During a difficult period in her life, she began drawing classes and then oil painting. Luckily for us, she kept painting from there.

Now, around her full-time job at a not-for-profit, she often paints late into the night in her Northern Beaches home. A lawyer, a mother (of humans and felines), and an artist. 

Angela’s pet portraits capture more than appearance. She looks for the quirks and expressions that make each animal who they are. A food-loving Zazu is surprised by a piece of sushi, while a contemplative Ollie gazes into a French armoire, looking for Narnia.

Her still life works turn that same affectionate attention to the objects and spaces around us. Through Angela's eyes, we encounter a tableau of flowers, wine, and a favourite novel, a unique op shop find, or a mouth-watering plate of iced Vovos.

Angela's paintings make room for nostalgia, humour and joy. And usually, a cat.

Jesslyn Murphy is a Melbourne-based artist whose maximalist, semi-abstract landscapes transform familiar places into atmospheric, dreamlike and immersive worlds.

Jesslyn has loved drawing since childhood and began painting in her late teens, creating works for herself, friends and family. When she reached long-service leave as a medical sonographer, she marked the milestone with a special gift to herself: her own art studio. There, Jesslyn formalised her art practice. Today, she balances medical sonography, motherhood and her art.

Jesslyn finds inspiration close to home. On walks through her local neighbourhood, she photographs the Australian landscape… secret places, intense light, tangled undergrowth, and lesser-taken paths. More recently, her attention has turned to industrial urban scenes. She is drawn to places others may pass without noticing.

Before approaching a blank canvas, Jesslyn creates small colour studies from her photographs. She then develops the one that speaks to her most into a larger work.

Colour often draws people towards Jesslyn’s paintings. Venture a little closer… and the exquisite brushwork, expressive marks, abstraction and small, hidden details emerge. Her works are puzzles to explore, revealing something different each time we return. They evoke a sense of peace and inspire us to go outside and look more closely at our surroundings.

For Jesslyn, art is a record of culture. It captures a snapshot of what we value, how we live and the world around us.

She was a finalist in the fortyfivedownstairs Emerging Artist Award 2025 and previously won first prize in Kingston Arts’ Artz Blitz in 2016 and the People’s Choice Award in 2017.

Lee Machain is a fine artist whose intricate watercolour paintings explore the beauty and character of the natural world.

Working with botanicals, flora and fauna, Lee brings remarkable patience and careful observation to her subjects. A flowering magnolia, a ripe quince or a tiny blue wren becomes a world of detail, each painted with sensitivity to colour, texture and form. Her considered compositions give these familiar subjects space to hold our attention, revealing the small things we might otherwise pass by.

There is a personal connection to many of the things Lee paints. Pansies grow in her own garden, while an Australian hibiscus recalls childhood visits to her grandparents. Her sense of humour finds its way into her titles, too. A dainty sparrow becomes ‘Meryl Cheep’, and a quince is ‘Not Yet Paste’.

Lee began painting during her recovery from brain surgery in 2018, turning to watercolour and quickly falling in love with botanical art. Since then, she has studied at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and the Botanical Art School of Melbourne, and exhibited at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

A passionate collector and supporter of Australian art, Lee is also a generous champion of other artists. Kind, funny and encouraging, she has spent years celebrating the work of others. 

Her own paintings offer another expression of that generosity: a thoughtful sharing of the things she notices, loves and finds beautiful.

Marjan Bakhtiarikish is a classical painter whose work is grounded in the traditions of drawing, observation and narrative painting.

She studied for four years in Florence, including at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, before receiving a scholarship to the Russian Academy of Art. She later trained with Charles H. Cecil in the sight-size tradition.

Her years in Italy fostered a deep engagement with the Old Masters. There, she spent countless hours in the museums, churches and collections of Florence and Rome, drawing directly from their works and from Antiquity.

Marjan works from life. Portrait and figure studies, life drawing and plein-air landscape studies form the foundation of her practice, providing the visual knowledge from which her larger works develop. Her compositions build upon this direct observation through memory and imagination.

Drawing on poetry, mythology, literature and the Western classical tradition, Marjan seeks to create poetic and timeless images that speak to enduring human experience. Through archetypal themes of love, loss, longing, beauty and fate, her paintings evoke a powerful response, while leaving room for viewers to bring something of their own experience to them.

Marjan is drawn to images that retain a sense of mystery. Her paintings do not reveal everything at once, but invite the viewer to return, linger, and discover something more.

Holding a master’s degree in English Literature, Marjan’s love of reading is closely connected with her love of narrative, character and the poetic possibilities of painting.

Marjan has exhibited in New York and the historic city of Rome. She is regularly shortlisted in national and international competitions. Her distinctions include Overall Winner of the Du Rietz Art Awards and Winner of the WWK International Classical Figurative Prize, Norway.
